Advocate
Goal:
Advocate for a mental health system that meets the needs of its people.
How:
- Call for a mental health system that is accessible, affordable and responsive to the needs of all Tasmanians.
- Work with our members and networks to raise awareness of service demand and respond to gaps.
- Champion the need for all Tasmanians to have access to adequate and appropriate psychosocial supports.
- Demonstrate systemic improvement by ensuring effective data and evaluation measures are implemented.
See how this aligns with our Strategic Plan.

MHCT works closely with our members and stakeholders to identify service gaps, issues and opportunities for collaboration and better coordination of services in the Tasmanian mental health system. We provide feedback directly to the Tasmanian Government, Primary Health Tasmania (PHT) and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on these challenges and opportunities to assist in improving the mental health system for all Tasmanians.
Some of our work in this space:
Budget Priority Submissions
Show "Budget Priority Submissions"Every year the Tasmanian Government provides opportunity for the community to make submissions as part of developing the Budget for the following year. This ensures that all Tasmanians can have a say on the State’s budget priorities and policies.
At MHCT, we take this opportunity to have our say with the development of Budget Priority Submissions. Each year we continue to advocate for a mental health system that meets the needs of its people.
Check out our past and current Budget Priority Submissions to learn more.
Reports and Submissions
Show "Reports and Submissions"As part of our advocacy we develop reports, policy submissions and briefing papers, and provide trusted advice to governments on key areas of reform and raising the positive mental health and wellbeing in priority populations.
Some highlights are featured below, but you can find all our past and current reports and submissions in the MHCT Resource Library.
Advisory and Working Groups
Show "Advisory and Working Groups"MHCT co-facilitates a variety of Advisory Groups, Steering Committees, Working Groups and Communities of Practice in order to move mental health sector reform forward in Tasmania. These groups focus on sector issues such as workforce shortages, peer workforce development, promotion of mental health & wellbeing, inclusion of priority populations, and more.
Advocating for prevention
Show "Advocating for prevention"Prevention and early intervention are key aspects of our advocacy.
We champion the need for all Tasmanians to have access to adequate and appropriate community psychosocial supports. In March 2025, we released a report that outlined a plan to fund the gap in supports for 9,500 Tasmanians with severe and moderate mental illness.
As of April 2025, MHCT is contributing to discussions on the Productivity Commission’s review of the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement. We want to help Tasmania negotiate a strong bilateral agreement on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention with the Commonwealth prior to the current agreement’s expiry.
